New Delhi, Jan 31: Australia’s hopes for a second T20 World Cup title faced a significant setback today as premier fast bowler Pat Cummins was officially ruled out of the 2026 tournament. Cricket Australia confirmed that a lingering back injury has sidelined the veteran, forcing a reshuffle of the 15-man squad just days before the event begins in India and Sri Lanka.
Mitchell Marsh has been named captain of the squad, which sees Ben Dwarshuis and Matthew Renshaw drafted in as replacements. While Dwarshuis provides a fresh left-arm pace option, Renshaw offers versatility in the batting order. National selector Tony Dodemaide mentioned that the decision regarding Cummins was necessary to allow him adequate recovery time.
“With Pat needing more time to recover from his back injury, Ben is a ready replacement who offers a left-arm pace option as well as dynamic fielding and late-order hitting,” Dodemaide said. He noted that the squad’s structure remains robust, with Dwarshuis expected to adapt well to the subcontinental conditions.
The Australian team is placed in Group B and will begin their campaign against Ireland on February 11 at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. Selector Dodemaide further said that the inclusion of Renshaw provides “extra middle order support” as the team prepares for spin-heavy conditions in the early stages of the tournament.
