Chandigarh, March 27 – Punjab Leader of Opposition (LoP) Partap Singh Bajwa on Thursday criticized the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for opposing a resolution introduced by the Punjab Congress, urging the Government of India to confer the Bharat Ratna on Shaheed-E-Azam Sardar Bhagat Singh.
“The so-called revolutionaries in AAP opposed the resolution instead of unanimously passing it, which is highly unfortunate,” Bajwa said.
The resolution, presented on behalf of the entire Punjab Congress, read: “This House unanimously resolves to recommend to the Government of India to confer the Bharat Ratna on Shaheed-E-Azam Sardar Bhagat Singh for his unparalleled and inspirational sacrifice in igniting the movement against British colonial rule.”
Bajwa accused the AAP MLAs of creating disorder as he began speaking, claiming they acted on instructions from their “masters in Delhi.”
“The AAP MLAs had already conspired against the resolution,” he alleged.
He further slammed AAP for what he called a “dishonor” to Bhagat Singh, pointing out the party’s alleged double standards.
“They have installed Bhagat Singh’s photographs in every government office but follow the principles of James Scott, who ordered the assault on Lala Lajpat Rai during the protest against the Simon Commission. They preach Bhagat Singh but practice James Scott’s principles,” he remarked.
Bajwa also mentioned the efforts of Bhagwant Singh from Ghagga village in Patiala, who had been pushing for the Bharat Ratna and National Martyr status for Bhagat Singh.
He noted that even Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan had written to the Union Government on the matter, yet AAP opposed the Congress-led resolution.
“Had the same resolution been brought by AAP, we would have supported it wholeheartedly,” Bajwa said.
He also criticized Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann for placing his own name above Bhagat Singh’s on the foundation stone of Shaheed Bhagat Singh Government Medical College at SBS Nagar. “Isn’t that a disrespect to Shaheed-E-Azam Sardar Bhagat Singh?” he asked.
