AMRITSAR/BATALA, Aug 3— A young man was arrested by Batala police on Saturday for allegedly issuing a threat on Instagram to Udayveer Singh Randhawa, son of Gurdaspur MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, officials said.

The accused, identified as Gagandeep Singh, was tracked down and detained from the Gulmarg Avenue area of Amritsar in the early hours of the morning. He is a resident of a village under the jurisdiction of Ghanian-Ke-Bangar police station in Batala police district.

According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Suhail Qasim Mir, the threat emerged in response to a video Udayveer had posted on his social media handle. “A threatening comment was made from the Instagram account ‘Gagan Randhawa’. We immediately launched technical surveillance in coordination with Instagram’s law enforcement team and traced the IP address and login credentials to Gagandeep,” the SSP said.

The arrest came shortly after MP Randhawa raised the matter at the highest levels in New Delhi, prompting swift police action. “We are still investigating whether Gagandeep has any connections with gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria, as Udayveer has reportedly been receiving threats linked to him,” Mir said.

An FIR has been registered, and the accused’s mobile phone has been sent for forensic analysis. Authorities are also examining whether this case is connected to a separate firing incident in Fatehgarh Churian on Friday.

“We are close to identifying and apprehending the two motorcycle-borne suspects involved in the shooting,” a senior officer added. However, no direct link to Bhagwanpuria has been established so far in either case.

The police noted that extortion threats to prominent residents in Batala have often been attributed to Bhagwanpuria’s network. The SSP confirmed that multiple written requests had been sent to officials at Silchar Jail in Assam, where the gangster is currently lodged, asking for stricter surveillance and communication restrictions.

Family members of MP Randhawa have expressed fears that they could be targeted by Bhagwanpuria’s associates. The investigation remains ongoing.
