PATNA, June 21 — In a major pre-poll announcement, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Saturday said the state government has approved a substantial hike in monthly pensions for senior citizens, widows, and persons with disabilities — from ₹400 to ₹1,100, effective July 2025.

“I am happy to inform you that under the Social Security Pension Scheme, all the elderly, disabled and widowed women will now get a pension of ₹1,100 every month,” Kumar posted on X, calling the move part of his government’s commitment to ensuring dignity and support for the state’s most vulnerable citizens.

The new pension amount will be credited on the 10th of every month directly to beneficiaries’ bank accounts.

According to Kumar, the decision will benefit nearly 1.96 crore people across Bihar. “The elderly are an important part of society, and their dignified living is our top priority,” the chief minister said.

Bandana Preyashi, Secretary of the Social Welfare Department, told PTI that the enhanced pension will provide financial relief and social security to millions of marginalised households. “This decision of the government will help beneficiaries and ensure they live a dignified life, which is our top priority,” she said.

The announcement comes just months ahead of the Bihar Assembly elections and is seen as a significant welfare step aimed at broadening social support ahead of the polls.
