New York, October 23, 2024: Billionaire and Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has discreetly donated approximately $50 million to Future Forward, a nonprofit organization backing Kamala Harris’ bid for the U.S. presidency, according to a report by The New York Times on Tuesday. Gates’ contribution was intended to remain private, as he has not publicly endorsed Harris, the Democratic candidate running against Republican Donald Trump in the upcoming November 5 election.

Sources told The New York Times that Gates has expressed concern in private conversations about the potential consequences of a second Trump presidency. The Gates Foundation, co-chaired by Melinda Gates, is reportedly worried about the possibility of severe cuts to global health programs and family planning initiatives under a Trump administration.

Despite his concerns, Gates has maintained a neutral stance, emphasizing his ability to collaborate with either political party. “I have a long history of working with leaders across the political spectrum,” Gates said in a statement to the Times. However, he acknowledged that this election holds unique importance.

“This election is different,” Gates stated. “I’ve made a commitment to improving healthcare, reducing poverty, and fighting climate change in the U.S. and around the world. The outcome of this election carries unprecedented significance for Americans and for the most vulnerable populations globally.”

In a July interview with FRANCE 24, Gates welcomed Kamala Harris’ nomination, which came after President Joe Biden decided not to seek re-election. Gates expressed optimism about Harris’ approach to emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence.

“We need someone younger who can think about AI and other challenges of the future,” Gates remarked.

Harris, who turned 60 last week, is seen as a candidate who could inject new energy into the presidency. In contrast, Trump, her rival, is 78 years old, making him the oldest nominee for president in U.S. history.

Gates is not the only billionaire throwing support behind Harris. According to Forbes, at least 81 billionaires have financially backed her campaign, including notable figures from various industries. However, one of the world’s richest men, Elon Musk, is supporting Trump in the upcoming election.

As the election approaches, Gates’ significant donation to Future Forward, and his concerns over a Trump presidency, reflect a growing sense of urgency among many wealthy donors regarding the potential direction of U.S. policy.

While Gates has refrained from making a public endorsement, his financial contribution and statements suggest he views the outcome of the 2024 election as pivotal for global issues such as healthcare, climate change, and poverty alleviation.
