New Delhi, Dec 14: The BJP parliamentary board on Sunday appointed Bihar Road Construction Minister Nitin Nabin as the party’s national working president, a move that places the 45-year-old among the frontrunners for the top organisational post.

The decision was taken by the parliamentary board headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, party sources said. Nabin will function as working president until the BJP completes the process of electing a full-term national president. J P Nadda will continue as BJP president in the interim.

“Nitin Nabin will discharge the responsibilities of national working president till the organisational election is completed,” a senior BJP leader said.

Nabin, a multiple-term MLA from Bankipur in Patna, was recently inducted into the Bihar cabinet as road construction minister. He is regarded as having close ties with both the RSS and the BJP’s central leadership, party insiders said.

In the BJP’s organisational tradition, the working president is usually elevated as the full-term party chief. Nadda himself followed a similar path before taking over as BJP president after Amit Shah joined the Union Cabinet.

If formally elected, Nabin will become the youngest BJP national president, surpassing Nitin Gadkari, who assumed the post at the age of 52.
