Ludhiana, May 31– With just two days remaining to file nominations for the Ludhiana West bypoll, the BJP on Saturday announced senior leader Jiwan Gupta as its official candidate. The by-election is scheduled for June 19, following the death of sitting AAP MLA Gurpreet Bassi Gogi.
Party insiders said the choice of Gupta, a core committee member, has been met with appreciation by seasoned BJP leaders, who viewed it as recognition of senior leadership within the party.
The Election Commission issued the poll notification on May 26, with June 2 as the last date for filing nominations. Scrutiny will take place on June 3, and withdrawal of candidature is allowed till June 5. The votes will be counted on June 23.
