Chandigarh, Dec 3: Punjab BJP working president Ashwani Sharma on Tuesday ruled out any possibility of the party reviving its alliance with the Shiromani Akali Dal, saying the BJP will contest the 2027 Assembly elections “entirely on its own.”
Speaking to reporters after a meeting on block samiti and zila parishad polls, Sharma said the party has been planning with all 117 seats in mind. His remarks followed former chief minister Amarinder Singh’s recent interview in which he sought a pre-poll tie-up between the BJP and the SAD.
“Captain Saab is an elder. He expressed his views in his personal capacity,” Sharma said. “But the party is clear from day one. The BJP is making plans, carrying out activities and expanding its organisation for all 117 seats.”
Sharma pointed to similar statements made earlier by Union minister Ravneet Singh Bittu, who had also said the BJP would go solo and ruled out any alliance with the SAD. The two parties split in 2020 after the SAD walked out of the NDA over the now-repealed farm laws.
The state BJP leader said the “positive atmosphere” created by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 11 years in office had bolstered public faith in the party in Punjab. He said people, much like in Haryana, want an end to drugs and gang crime, stronger policing and assured minimum support price for crops.
Sharma also responded sharply to Bathinda MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal’s claim that the BJP alone cannot form a government in Punjab. “Since when did our sister Harsimrat become an astrologer? Nothing is impossible in politics,” he said.
Targeting the AAP government, he said it had “started sensing the outcome of 2027” and was issuing “baseless statements to divert public attention.” He questioned the ruling party’s performance on law and order. “Has the drug mafia ended? Have the promises made to farmers, labourers and women been fulfilled?” he asked.
