BJP MLAs Call Mamta Banerjee Anti-Hindu

Kolkata, 18 February – West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s criticism of the ongoing Maha Kumbh Mela has sparked outrage among BJP leaders, who on Tuesday labeled her an “anti-Hindu chief minister.” Banerjee, addressing the West Bengal Legislative Assembly, condemned the Uttar Pradesh government’s handling of the event in Prayagraj, referring to it as “Mrityu Kumbh” (Death Kumbh) due to its mismanagement and lack of planning.

“Maha Kumbh has turned into ‘Mrityu Kumbh’… For the rich, there are systems available to get camps for as high as ₹1 lakh. For the poor, there are no arrangements at Kumbh… Stampede situations are common in a mela, but it’s important to make arrangements,” Banerjee said, criticizing Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s administration for the tragic incidents that occurred during the gathering.

Her remarks, which followed a deadly stampede at the Kumbh, were met with immediate protests by BJP MLAs, who raised slogans and wore saffron turbans inside the assembly.

The BJP, led by Opposition Leader Suvendu Adhikari, condemned Banerjee’s comments, accusing her of insulting one of Hinduism’s most revered religious events. “Such an insult to the Maha Kumbh will not be tolerated,” BJP leaders said.

In a heated response, Banerjee defended herself, challenging the BJP to prove allegations linking her to Bangladeshi fundamentalists. “I’ll resign if you can prove it,” she declared, referring to accusations raised by BJP lawmakers.

She also vowed to take the matter up with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing BJP MLAs of spreading false claims about her involvement with extremist elements.

BJP IT Cell chief Amit Malviya further criticized Banerjee, claiming her comments revealed a deep contempt for Hindu traditions.

On X, Malviya wrote, “Mamata Banerjee, under the influence of Firhad Hakim, has once again revealed her disdain for Bharat’s cultural and religious traditions.

By calling the sacred Maha Kumbh ‘Mrityu Kumbh,’ she has attacked one of Hinduism’s most revered pilgrimages.”

Malviya continued, accusing Banerjee of selectively supporting religious groups, stating, “She goes out of her way to facilitate Eid gatherings, fund madrasas, and allow unrestricted religious processions for extremists. But when it comes to Hindu events, her attitude shifts to hostility.”

He also referenced previous instances where Banerjee had criticized Hindu religious organizations.

The ongoing war of words between the two parties highlights the deepening political divide in West Bengal as both sides continue to engage in sharp rhetoric.
