Islamabad, Feb 6: A suicide bomber detonated explosives at the entrance of Imambargah Qasr-e-Khadijatul Kubra in Islamabad’s Tarlai area on Friday, resulting in multiple fatalities. The attack occurred while worshippers were gathered for afternoon prayers, prompting an immediate emergency response from local residents and security forces.
Preliminary reports indicate that the assailant attempted to force entry into the religious premises but triggered the blast at the main gate after being intercepted by security personnel. The force of the explosion caused significant structural damage, leaving the area littered with shattered glass and debris.
Witnesses at the scene noted that the blast took place near the entrance just as the congregation was at its peak. The injured were moved to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) and Polyclinic for urgent care, with medical staff noting that many victims remain in critical condition.
Videos shared on social media platforms captured the aftermath of the explosion, showing local residents and worshippers working together to transport the wounded to hospitals. “Hospital officials said some victims sustained serious injuries, though the exact condition of all those hurt was not immediately clear,” according to local reports covering the medical response.
Security cordons have been established around the Tarlai area as investigators gather evidence from the blast site. Authorities mentioned that the alertness of the guards at the gate likely prevented the bomber from reaching the interior of the shrine, which could have resulted in a higher casualty count.
