Ropar, Jan 8: Court proceedings at the Ropar judicial complex were abruptly halted on Thursday after an email warning of a bomb threat prompted authorities to evacuate the premises as a precautionary measure.
Official sources said the threatening email, received by judicial authorities earlier in the day, warned of an attempt to blow up the court building. The information was immediately shared with the police, following which all courtrooms and offices were vacated.
Advocates, litigants, court staff and members of the public present inside the complex were asked to leave, triggering panic and confusion. Eyewitnesses said people rushed out as police personnel moved in to secure the area and restrict access to surrounding roads.
Senior Superintendent of Police Gulneet Khurana confirmed that security agencies responded without delay. “We received information about an email threatening to blow up the judicial complex. Immediate security measures were taken and the entire area was evacuated. The matter is under investigation,” she said.
As a precautionary step, authorities also evacuated the judicial complex at Anandpur Sahib, fearing a possible wider security risk. Police teams were deployed at both locations to carry out thorough checks.
Bomb disposal squads and other security agencies were alerted, and standard safety protocols were followed. Officials said no suspicious object had been found till the filing of this report.
Police cyber teams are working to trace the origin of the threatening email. Court work is expected to resume only after security agencies give clearance.
