‘Broom Sweeping’ Remark by Mayor Shameful: Samana

MOHALI, May 24 — Mohali Municipal Corporation councillor Sarabjit Singh Samana has strongly condemned Mayor Amarjit Singh Jeeti Sidhu for describing the civic body as merely a “broom sweeping institution,” calling the remark “shameful” and a “direct insult” to the efforts of corporation workers and the trust of city residents.

“If the mayor of a developing city like Mohali makes such a narrow statement, it reflects the failure of his entire tenure,” said Samana. He added that the Municipal Corporation handles far more than sanitation, including infrastructure projects like parks, street lights, libraries, and urban planning — all under a budget exceeding ₹200 crore.

Demanding accountability, Samana called on Senior Deputy Mayor Amrik Singh Somal and Deputy Mayor Kuljit Bedi to clarify whether they support the mayor’s statement. “Silence from them will be seen as agreement,” he warned.

Samana also criticized the mayor’s handling of the city’s cleanliness, stating that garbage-laden plots, fire outbreaks, and administrative inaction have worsened conditions. “If the mayor is reducing the corporation’s scope to escape his responsibility, it clearly shows his failure,” he said.

Reaffirming his commitment, Samana vowed to continue fighting to uphold the dignity of the Municipal Corporation and ensure it remains a progressive institution.
