FARIDKOT, 17 February —A private bus fell into a drain in Punjab’s Faridkot district on Tuesday morning, killing at least five passengers and injuring 26 others, officials said.
The accident occurred around 8 a.m. on the Faridkot-Kotkapura road when the bus, carrying 36 passengers from Muktsar to Amritsar, lost control and plunged off a 10-foot-high bridge.
Eyewitnesses said the bus first collided with a truck before veering off the road.
“The impact caused the bus to break through the bridge railing and fall into the drain,” a bystander said.
Faridkot Senior Superintendent of Police Pragya Jain said the injured were rushed to Guru Gobind Singh Medical College and Hospital. “Two critically injured passengers have been referred to Amritsar, one of whom lost an arm,” Jain said.
A help desk has been set up at the hospital to assist victims’ families.
