Toronto, 19 November 2024: Foreign students in Canada, including thousands of Indian nationals, can now work up to 24 hours per week off-campus without requiring a work permit, a notable increase from the previous limit of 20 hours.
The change, announced by Immigration, Citizenship Canada (IRCC), aims to provide students with greater financial and professional opportunities while pursuing their studies.
IRCC Minister Mark Miller stressed the significance of the decision, stating, “This step allows students to gain Canadian work experience while addressing their academic and financial needs.”
The extended hours are expected to directly benefit Indian students, who form a substantial part of Canada’s international student population, by enabling them to earn more and acquire essential work experience.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau acknowledged issues within the immigration system, highlighting cases where migrants have been misled with false promises about jobs, diplomas, and expedited citizenship pathways. Trudeau noted that policy adjustments are being made to tackle these abuses and manage migrant inflow more effectively.
The expanded work-hour policy is seen as a move to better align students’ work-life balance while bolstering Canada’s workforce. It also reflects the government’s intent to provide international students with meaningful opportunities, ensuring their contributions to the country’s economy and society during their stay.
