New Delhi, Jan 14: The Union Government on Wednesday announced a significant reshuffle in the leadership of India’s paramilitary forces and counter-terrorism agencies. Senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Shatrujeet Kapur has been appointed as the Director General of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), while the incumbent ITBP chief, Praveen Kumar, has been moved to lead the Border Security Force (BSF).

“The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved his appointment as DG, NIA, for a tenure up to August 31, 2028,” the Personnel Ministry noted in an official order, which also confirmed Rakesh Aggarwal as the new head of the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

Shatrujeet Kapur, a 1990-batch officer of the Haryana cadre, is currently serving in his home state and is scheduled to lead the mountain-guarding ITBP until his retirement on October 31, 2026. He takes over from Praveen Kumar, a 1993-batch West Bengal cadre officer, who has been appointed the Director General of the BSF with a tenure extending until September 2030.

The restructuring also brings formal leadership to the NIA, with the promotion of Rakesh Aggarwal. A 1994-batch officer of the Himachal Pradesh cadre, Aggarwal was already serving as the Special Director General in the anti-terror agency and had been holding the additional charge of the top post. His formal appointment ensures continuity in the agency’s counter-terrorism operations for the next two years.
