New Delhi, April 02: The Centre has incorporated three amendments to the Waqf Amendment Bill, proposed by the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), a key ally in the NDA. The revised bill, presented in Lok Sabha by Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, aims to ensure the “welfare of Muslims.”
One key amendment ensures that the “Waqf by User” clause will apply prospectively, meaning existing Waqf properties registered under this provision will remain protected even if no formal Waqf deed exists.
To strengthen dispute resolution, TDP suggested replacing district collectors with a designated officer above their rank to handle cases of alleged wrongful claims by Waqf Boards. This, party leaders argued, would lead to a fairer process at the state level.
Another amendment extends the timeline for uploading Waqf property documents on the central portal. The original bill required registration within six months, but the NDA alliance pushed for an extension, citing practical challenges.
The Joint Committee of Parliament accepted this proposal, allowing the Waqf Tribunal to grant extensions in select cases where delays are justified.
According to sources, this revision ensures Waqf properties get sufficient time for proper registration while maintaining transparency in the process.
