Centre Holds Panjab University Overhaul, Fresh Date Pending

Chandigarh, November 5, 2025 — The Central Government on Wednesday announced a pause in the planned restructuring of Panjab University’s Senate and Syndicate, stating that the changes will take effect only from a date to be notified later.

In a revised order, the government said the Punjab University Act, 1947, “shall have effect from the date, as appointed by the Central Government, subject to the following modifications.” Officials clarified that no immediate implementation would take place, signalling a temporary hold amid rising political tensions.

The decision comes after widespread protests by students, opposition parties, and farmer unions, following reports last Saturday in The Tribune that set off a political storm in Punjab and Chandigarh. Critics have described the proposed reforms as “unconstitutional” and “anti-federal,” while supporters argue the changes are necessary to reduce political influence over the university.

Observers said the government’s move appears to be a tactical pause, aimed at defusing the escalating confrontation and allowing for further consultations.
