New Delhi/Chandigarh, March 6: The Central Government has submitted a confidential intelligence assessment regarding the safety of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikram Singh Majithia to the Punjab and Haryana High Court. Presented in a sealed envelope on Friday, the report follows a judicial directive to evaluate the potential risks faced by the political leader.
Additional Solicitor General of India Satya Pal Jain informed the court that the findings had been shared with the Punjab Government as early as February 27. He stated that the timely sharing of information was intended to allow the state to take necessary protective measures. Majithia’s petition, which has been pending since April 2025, asserts that his active political involvement and public appearances have significantly heightened his security risks.
The Punjab Government, however, requested additional time to examine the Centre’s findings and thoroughly evaluate the security requirements. The court affirmed that the state must clarify its official position by the next session. Consequently, the hearing has been adjourned to March 17.
Advocate DS Sobti, representing the Akali leader, maintained that a restoration of Z-plus security cover is essential given the gravity of the threats. The court declared that until the next hearing, the state of Punjab must ensure that Majithia remains adequately protected. This fresh assessment was initiated during previous proceedings where both the Centre and the state were directed to provide updated reports by March 6.
