LANDRAN, June 27 — Reinforcing its status as a hub for innovation and intellectual property, Chandigarh Group of Colleges (CGC), Landran has once again earned a place among India’s top 10 academic institutions for patent filings. Ranked sixth nationally, the institute filed 977 patents during 2023–24, according to the Annual Report of the Controller General of Patents, Designs, Trademarks and Geographical Indications, Government of India.
This marks the seventh consecutive year that CGC has featured in the national top 10 list, placing it among a select few institutions from Punjab to maintain such consistent performance.
“This accomplishment is a testament to our unrelenting efforts in promoting innovation and entrepreneurship,” said Satnam Singh Sandhu, Chairman, CGC Landran. “We are proud of our students and faculty and are committed to supporting them in developing new technologies and improving existing ones.”
To foster research and invention, CGC has developed a robust ecosystem including a dedicated Research and Development cell, an Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) cell, an Incubation Centre, and the ACIC-RISE association supported by NITI Aayog.
According to official data, 92,168 patent applications were filed nationwide during the period, with filings by Indian applicants increasing by 19.1% over the previous year. Punjab emerged as one of the top five states and Union Territories for patent activity, contributing 4,604 filings—following Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Uttar Pradesh.
Within CGC, the Mechanical Engineering and Electronics & Communication Engineering departments led patent activity, with 135 and 134 filings respectively. The Chandigarh Business School of Administration also made a significant contribution, accounting for 225 patent filings.
Among the institution’s standout innovations:
- A Virtual Intensive Care Unit system for remote patient monitoring, by Prof. (Dr.) Dinesh Arora
- A crop water management system promoting sustainability and food security, by Prof. (Dr.) Simarpreet Kaur of ECE
- An automated tyre health monitoring device to improve vehicle safety, developed by Mechanical Engineering students
- An ocular drug delivery-enabled nanostructured lipid carrier aimed at enhancing treatment of eye diseases, filed by students of the Pharmacy department
