Chandigarh to Provide ₹10,000 Monthly Pension to Acid Attack Survivors

CHANDIGARH, July 4: Acid attack survivors in the Union Territory of Chandigarh will now receive a lifetime monthly pension of ₹10,000, aligning with the assistance already being provided in Punjab and Haryana.

The assurance was given by the UT administration during the hearing of a contempt petition filed by Advocate H.C. Arora in the Punjab and Haryana High Court. The case stemmed from a previous public interest litigation (PIL) where Arora alleged that the UT had failed to honour its commitment to offer monthly financial assistance to acid attack victims at par with neighbouring states.

In response, the administration submitted a draft notification outlining the pension scheme and informed the court that the final notification would be issued within a day or two, pending approval from the UT Administrator.

Punjab has been offering ₹10,000 per month to acid attack victims since 2016 — a standard that Chandigarh has now agreed to match.

The pension scheme is expected to provide critical financial support and long-term relief to survivors, many of whom face severe physical, emotional, and economic challenges following the attacks.
