New Delhi, May 18 — Chief Justice of India B R Gavai on Sunday reaffirmed the supremacy of the Constitution over any branch of governance, stating that neither the Judiciary, the Executive, nor the Parliament holds absolute authority.
“Neither the Judiciary nor the Executive and the Parliament is supreme, but it is the Constitution of India which is supreme, and all the three wings have to work as per the Constitution,” the Chief Justice said.
Speaking at an event where a book chronicling 50 notable judgments delivered by him was released, Justice Gavai emphasized the strength of the Constitution’s basic structure and the equal status of its three pillars.
He noted that effective governance required all constitutional organs to function harmoniously and respect one another’s roles.
“All the organs of the Constitution must reciprocate and give due respect to each other,” he added.
Justice Gavai’s remarks come amid ongoing debates about the balance of power between institutions, further underlining the judiciary’s commitment to constitutional values and institutional integrity.
