CM Denies ‘Toilet Tax,’ Accuses BJP of Playing Politics Over Issue

Shimla/New Delhi: Himachal Pradesh’s Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu firmly rejected claims of introducing a ‘toilet tax’ in the state. Speaking to the media in New Delhi on Friday, he labeled such allegations as unfounded and criticized their use for political gain.

“In light of the upcoming Haryana elections, the BJP is either resorting to religious tactics or raising the toilet tax issue. It is inappropriate to politicize matters for electoral advantage, especially when the allegations lack truth,” he stated.

Sukhu noted that before the 2022 Vidhan Sabha elections, the previous BJP government had introduced incentives worth ₹5,000 crore, including free water in rural areas, in an attempt to sway voters.

Despite these efforts, he pointed out that the electorate chose Congress.

He also mentioned that the current administration has initiated measures to rationalize water subsidies, including a nominal charge of ₹100 per connection per month for rural areas, even as free water is provided to five-star hotels.
