Mandi, Feb 7: The political climate in Himachal Pradesh has intensified as Congress leader Jagdish Reddy accused the central government of giving “step-motherly treatment” to the hill state. Addressing the media, Reddy alleged that the Union’s decision to withhold vital grants is an attempt to create economic pressure and undermine a democratically elected government.

Reddy mentioned that the state government has remained determined to serve the people despite facing severe infrastructure damage from recent disasters. He noted that the focus remains on healthcare, education, and road connectivity, even as financial assistance from the Centre has reportedly been slashed.

“Himachal Pradesh is not asking for alms. RDG is our constitutional right, which is being denied for political reasons,” Reddy noted, referring to the Revenue Deficit Grant.

In response to the current fiscal challenges, Reddy mentioned a proposed 10-point ‘Self-Reliant Himachal Roadmap’ aimed at generating internal revenue. The plan includes increasing hydropower royalties, strengthening green tax mechanisms, and focusing on value addition in the agriculture and horticulture sectors. He also mentioned that the state would look into the monetization of government assets and stricter enforcement against tax evasion to ensure sustainability.

Reddy mentioned that treating Himachal in a discriminatory manner is dangerous for national unity. He urged the Union Government to reconsider its stance, noting that the state’s rivers and forests serve the entire country and deserve fair financial support.
