Congress Revokes Suspension of MLA Vikramjit Chaudhary

LUDHIANA, June 2— The Congress party on Monday revoked the suspension of Phillaur MLA Vikramjit Singh Chaudhary during its ‘Save the Constitution’ rally held in the Dakha Assembly segment near Ludhiana.

Chaudhary, who was suspended in April 2024 for alleged anti-party activities ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, was formally welcomed back into the party. His suspension followed public dissent after he and his mother, former MP Karamjit Kaur Chaudhary, sought the Congress ticket for the Jalandhar parliamentary seat.

When the party chose former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi as its candidate, Vikramjit opposed the decision, resulting in his suspension. His mother later joined the BJP and campaigned for its candidate, Sushil Kumar Rinku. Despite the infighting, Channi won the Jalandhar seat with a commanding margin.

Chaudhary’s return is being seen as a political counterbalance after the reinduction of Kamaljit Karwal and Karan Warring into the party fold, facilitated by Channi, election in-charge Rana Gurjeet Singh, and Ludhiana West candidate Bharat Bhushan Ashu.

Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) chief Raja Warring had earlier objected to Karwal and Warring’s re-entry, citing their alleged role in sabotaging his own Lok Sabha campaign in Ludhiana.

Chaudhary, who is aligned with the Warring-Bajwa faction, is believed to have re-entered the party fold through their support, intensifying the rift between rival camps within Punjab Congress.

The move mirrors the ongoing power struggle in the party, which was also evident in April when Warring, Bajwa, and Capt Sandeep Sandhu held a rally in Sultanpur Lodhi backing ex-MLA Navtej Cheema — a move that irked Independent MLA Rana Inder Partap and his father, Rana Gurjeet Singh.
