Congress Slams BJP Over MPs’ Supreme Court Remarks

New Delhi, April 20: The Congress party on Sunday criticized the BJP for distancing itself from the controversial remarks made by its MPs Nishikant Dubey and Dinesh Sharma about the Supreme Court. Congress leaders called the move “damage control” and demanded stronger action, including their expulsion from the party.

Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh questioned why no disciplinary action had been taken against the two MPs, who had attacked the judiciary. “The BJP’s distancing itself from the remarks is nothing but damage control,” Ramesh wrote on X. He noted that these MPs were repeat offenders known for their hateful rhetoric, often targeting communities, institutions, and individuals. “It will fool nobody,” he added. “This is political hypocrisy at its peak.”

Ramesh also pointed out that the “outgoing BJP president” remained silent on similar criticisms of the judiciary from one of the party’s prominent figures. He further raised concerns over the Prime Minister’s silence on the issue, suggesting it amounted to tacit approval of such attacks. “Has the Prime Minister’s continued silence on these repeated attacks on the Constitution been a form of endorsement?” Ramesh asked. “Why hasn’t any action been taken against these MPs? Has Nadda issued show-cause notices?”

Mukul Wasnik, another Congress general secretary, tagged Ramesh’s remarks on X, amplifying the demand for action. “The minimum action should be the expulsion of these MPs,” Wasnik said, referring to the comments by Dubey and Sharma. “But we know no action will be taken.”

The controversy began when BJP president JP Nadda issued a statement distancing the party from Dubey and Sharma’s remarks. Nadda clarified that their comments were personal opinions and did not reflect the party’s stance. “The BJP has nothing to do with the comments made by MPs Nishikant Dubey and Dinesh Sharma,” he said on X. “We neither agree with nor support their remarks. The BJP absolutely rejects them.” Nadda added that he had instructed all party members to refrain from making similar comments.

The remarks from the two BJP MPs sparked outrage earlier this week. Dubey, a vocal member of the Lok Sabha, criticized the Supreme Court, claiming that if the apex court were to make laws, Parliament and state assemblies should be shut down. He also blamed Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna for purportedly inciting “civil wars” in the country. Sharma, a former Deputy Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, echoed similar sentiments, stating that no one, including the Supreme Court, had the authority to direct Parliament or the President.
