SRINAGAR, AUGUST 28 : Newly appointed Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kashmir Zone, Sujit Kumar on Friday said that combating terrorism and conducting counter-insurgency operations would continue to remain the primary focus of the security establishment in the Valley.
Kumar made the remarks during his first field visit to Srinagar after taking charge as the IGP Kashmir, where he reviewed the security arrangements put in place for Friday congregational prayers following Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi (SAW).
The newly appointed police chief also assessed the coordination and deployment of the Jammu and Kashmir Police along with other security agencies at locations witnessing large gatherings.
Addressing reporters during the visit, Kumar said that counter-terrorism operations have consistently remained a major priority for the security forces and would continue to receive sustained attention.
“Operations have remained our first priority in the past and will continue to remain our first priority,” the IGP said while responding to questions about the recent increase in counter-insurgency activities across Kashmir.
He said security forces have conducted several operations in different parts of the Valley in recent days, resulting in significant recoveries.
Security Arrangements Reviewed at Congregation Points
During his Srinagar visit, Kumar reviewed the overall security mechanism and inter-agency coordination at places where large numbers of people were expected to assemble for Friday prayers.
The IGP said his immediate focus was to assess the coordination between the police and other security agencies deployed on the ground.
“I joined you yesterday, and today we are here first to assess the coordination of our police team and other agencies,” he said.
He added that similar security reviews were being carried out at other major congregation points across Srinagar to ensure proper crowd management, uninterrupted movement and effective maintenance of law and order.
Public Cooperation Sought Amid Enhanced Security
The IGP also appealed to citizens to cooperate with the police and other security personnel, particularly in view of the additional security arrangements and traffic restrictions implemented around major prayer venues.
Kumar acknowledged that increased security measures could cause temporary inconvenience to commuters and residents but urged people to cooperate with the authorities.
“Many people are offering prayers today, so we seek your cooperation. We understand that movement is difficult for the public,” he said.
He assured the people that the Kashmir Zonal Police would continue working to safeguard their lives and property while taking all necessary measures to preserve peace and stability in the region.
“I congratulate everyone and want to assure the people that the Zonal Police is always there for you,” Kumar said.
Sujit Kumar assumed charge as Inspector General of Police, Kashmir Zone, on Thursday evening and subsequently began reviewing the security situation and operational preparedness across the Valley.
