Chandigarh, November 1: A local court has granted bail to Chandigarh Club executive member Vikas Bector, who was arrested on October 25 for his alleged involvement in a ₹7-crore extortion attempt reported by city-based advocate Gaurav Dheer, police said Friday.

Bector, already facing multiple criminal cases, was booked following a complaint filed by Dheer, a resident of Sector 10-A, Chandigarh. According to police, the case was registered under Sections 308(3) (extortion) and 351(2) (criminal intimidation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at the Mullanpur police station.

The complaint stemmed from an incident on August 31, when Dheer said he received an extortion call while at his father’s construction office in New Chandigarh. The call was allegedly made by Raman Aggarwal, a Panchkula-based businessman, who threatened him to withdraw a previous case lodged against Bector in December 2024.

In his statement to police, Dheer alleged that Aggarwal demanded ₹6–7 crore, claiming the money was intended for Bector. “When I questioned the demand, he told me to consider it extortion and warned of dire consequences if I refused,” Dheer stated in his complaint.

Aggarwal reportedly added that another accused, Nitin Goel, would follow up with Dheer to pursue the demand further. Based on the evidence gathered during the probe, Bector was taken into custody last week.

Police said Bector is already facing five other FIRs in separate criminal cases and had previously been declared a proclaimed offender in a 2012 case. “He was arrested after corroborative evidence linked him to the extortion attempt,” an investigating officer said.

Following his arrest, Bector moved a bail plea, which was accepted by the court earlier this week. The police investigation into the involvement of Aggarwal and Goel is ongoing, officials added.
