CHANDIGARH, June 10: Punjab is witnessing a fresh uptick in COVID-19 cases, with health authorities confirming that active infections in the state have nearly tripled over the past week—from 12 to 35. The resurgence has raised concerns among public health experts, particularly as the rise coincides with intensified election activities and peak summer travel.
According to the latest figures released by the Punjab Health Department, Ludhiana district has reported the highest number of new cases, with 23 infections recorded in just the past week. Of these, two were reported in the last 24 hours—one from the urban zone and another from a rural part of the district.
The situation has escalated as large crowds continue to gather for political campaigns and holiday travel. “The combination of public carelessness, high temperatures, and increased mobility is contributing to the virus spread,” said a senior health official.
Beyond Ludhiana, Jalandhar has registered six new cases, Mohali reported four, and Ferozepur accounted for two. In total, Punjab now has 35 active COVID-19 cases, a sharp rise from the previous week’s tally of 12.
Tragically, two COVID-related deaths were also confirmed in Ludhiana. A 69-year-old woman receiving treatment at PGIMER Chandigarh and a 39-year-old man admitted to Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, Chandigarh, both succumbed to the infection. Officials noted that both individuals had pre-existing medical conditions and recent travel histories, factors that made them more vulnerable to complications.
Health authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant, continue observing preventive measures, and avoid unnecessary gatherings. “This is a reminder that COVID-19 is still present. We must not let our guard down,” a health department spokesperson said.
The state government is monitoring the situation closely and has not ruled out precautionary advisories if cases continue to rise.
