Chandigarh, March 4 – Punjab Police intensified its anti-drug campaign Yudh Nashian Virudh on Tuesday, conducting raids at 524 locations, inspecting 164 pharmaceutical shops, and arresting 69 drug smugglers across the state.
According to the Police, the daylong operation led to the registration of 53 FIRs and the seizure of 1.5 kg heroin, 100 grams opium, 7,610 intoxicant tablets, and ₹1.33 lakh in drug money.
Special DGP Law and Order Arpit Shukla said over 250 police teams, comprising 1,900 personnel, checked 627 suspicious individuals under the supervision of 101 SP/DSP-rank officers.
Inspections of pharmaceutical shops in six districts—Hoshiarpur, SBS Nagar, Jalandhar Rural, Jalandhar Commissionerate, Kapurthala, and Rupnagar—aimed to curb the sale of habit-forming drugs.
CM Bhagwant Singh Mann has directed police officials to make Punjab drug-free within three months.
The state has formed a five-member cabinet subcommittee, led by Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema, to oversee the anti-drug drive.
Shukla said Punjab Police is executing a three-pronged strategy—Enforcement, De-addiction, and Prevention (EDP).
As part of de-addiction efforts, three individuals were convinced to seek rehabilitation, while 161 awareness events were held statewide.
“These operations will continue until drugs are eradicated,” he added.
