Leh, September 24: Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena has approved the withdrawal of criminal cases against 20 individuals booked in connection with the violence that erupted in Leh on September 24, 2025, during protests in the Union Territory.
The decision was announced by the Lieutenant Governor on Wednesday, a day ahead of the first anniversary of the incident. According to the LG, the move has been taken in the larger interest of peace, public tranquillity and social harmony in Ladakh.
“Following a comprehensive review, the Ladakh Police recommended a closure report for 20 individuals in FIR No. 144/2005, registered at Police Station Leh, under Section 360 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS),” the LG said in his statement.
The Lieutenant Governor said the decision would enable the 20 individuals to move forward with their lives and careers. He added that prioritising justice and healing over prolonged litigation was intended to contribute towards a more peaceful, united and harmonious society in Ladakh.
The announcement comes as Ladakh approaches the first anniversary of the September 24, 2025 violence in Leh, which occurred during protests seeking statehood and Sixth Schedule safeguards for Ladakh. Reports said the violence resulted in four deaths and several injuries, following which the administration ordered a judicial inquiry.
The withdrawal of cases has been among the issues raised by representatives of the Leh Apex Body (LAB) and Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) during their discussions with officials of the Ministry of Home Affairs.
The development also comes a day after the Ladakh administration indicated that closure reports would be filed in certain cases registered following the September 24 violence.
The Lieutenant Governor also expressed gratitude to Union Home Minister Amit Shah for what he described as his constant guidance and sympathetic approach in matters concerning the victims and their families.
The announcement comes amid programmes and activities planned in Ladakh to mark the first anniversary of the September 2025 incident, with representatives continuing discussions with the Centre on various demands concerning the Union Territory.
