McLeodganj, 2 Sept — The Dalai Lama, spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism, returned to his residence at Chunglakhang Monastery in McLeodganj on Tuesday following a month-and-a-half-long visit to Leh-Ladakh. His return, initially planned for Monday, was delayed due to adverse weather conditions.
Before reaching McLeodganj, the 90-year-old leader traveled to Delhi from Leh last Thursday for a routine medical check-up, a precaution considering his recent stay in high-altitude regions.
During his stay in Ladakh, the Dalai Lama maintained a busy schedule. He visited Zanskar to inaugurate the KarGön Mega Summer Symposium and laid the foundation stone of the Zanskar Mönlam Chörten. In Leh, he laid the foundation of a new Jokhang Temple, blessed the Dharma Centre at Choglamsar, and addressed approximately 50,000 followers at Shiwatsel on August 16-17, where long-life prayers were offered in his honor. He also conducted teachings attended by more than 21,000 devotees.
The visit included interactions with thousands of local devotees and international dignitaries, including Czech President Petr Pavel, who conveyed greetings on the Dalai Lama’s 90th birthday. The leader’s absence had affected the local tourism sector, with hotels, restaurants, and taxi operators reporting slower business. His return is expected to revive activity in the region.
After a brief rest, the Dalai Lama is scheduled to lead two special long-life prayer events in McLeodganj on September 10 and 20, during which he will personally deliver discourses.
