KHANNA, FEB 7: A 20,000-rupee debt for medical expenses reportedly drove a tenant to murder his 81-year-old landlady in Khanna’s Nawi Abadi area. The Khanna police confirmed the arrest of the suspect, Rahul, after he confessed to strangling NRI Jagpal Kaur in her residence on the night of January 31.
The breakthrough came after special police teams, supervised by SP (Detective) Pawanjit, analyzed technical evidence and local leads. Rahul, who had been living on the premises with his wife and children, became a prime suspect during the inquiry. He reportedly knew the victim received regular rental income and targeted her for quick cash.
“Our teams initiated a thorough investigation after the control room was alerted to the murder. The suspect had tried to mask his tracks by not carrying any electronic devices to the crime scene,” SSP Darpan Ahluwalia said.
The suspect told investigators that he scaled the wall of the house and hid inside, waiting for an opportunity to strike. He admitted to attacking the elderly woman from behind and tying her limbs after strangling her. After securing the money from her purse, he fled the scene, leaving the body locked in a bathroom.
“The accused directly said that the motive was purely financial, rooted in the pressure to repay a creditor in Aligarh. We have registered the case and are conducting further searches to gather more evidence,” the SSP noted while discussing the arrest.
