New Delhi, March 8 — The Delhi government on Saturday approved the ‘Mahila Samridhi Yojana,’ fulfilling a key election promise to provide ₹2,500 per month to women.
“Today is Women’s Day, and our cabinet has approved the scheme we promised during the elections,” Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced. “We have allocated ₹5,100 crore in the budget for its implementation, and registration will begin soon through a dedicated portal.”
A committee led by Gupta will oversee the scheme’s rollout. Additionally, a three-member ministerial panel—comprising Kapil Mishra, Ashish Sood, and Pravesh Verma—has been tasked with finalizing eligibility criteria. “The portal will be activated soon, and women will be able to apply,” Delhi minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa said.
Calling the move a “historic decision,” minister Ashish Sood told ANI, “This government doesn’t just offer lip service. The funds will reach women soon.”
Meanwhile, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which was ousted by the BJP in Delhi, criticized the delay. “Before the elections, Modi and BJP chief JP Nadda assured that every woman would receive ₹2,500 in her bank account by March 8.
The first cabinet meeting happened on Thursday, but there was no such announcement,” said Atishi, Delhi’s Leader of Opposition.
The BJP’s strategy paid off with a decisive win, securing 48 of the 70 assembly seats, marking its return to power in Delhi after 26 years. AAP was reduced to 22 seats, while Congress failed to win any.
