Dhakoli, October 12 — A routine evening in Dhakoli’s Guru Nanak Enclave turned chaotic on Saturday when a speeding car hit a pedestrian and injured at least four others while the driver allegedly tried to flee the scene, police said on Monday.
The accused, identified as Piyush Kohli, a resident of Basant Vihar Phase 2, Dhakoli, was driving a white Honda City (registration number PB 70 E 6793) when the incident occurred. According to officials, the victims were rushed to the Civil Hospital, Dhakoli, where they are receiving treatment for their injuries.
Closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage captured the disturbing sequence, showing the car striking a pedestrian before the driver reversed sharply in a bid to escape. In doing so, he rammed into several bystanders standing along the roadside. “The footage clearly shows the driver attempting to reverse the car after the first collision, which caused additional injuries,” a police officer said.
Eyewitnesses said panic gripped the area as the car hit multiple people in quick succession. “People screamed and ran to stop the vehicle. Some locals surrounded the car and prevented the driver from escaping,” said a witness present at the spot.
Police reached the scene soon after and took Kohli into custody. Dhakoli Station House Officer (SHO) Simranjeet Singh confirmed that a First Information Report (FIR) has been registered based on a complaint filed by Anil Garg, a resident of Swami Enclave, Dhakoli.
“We have booked the accused under Sections 281 (rash and negligent driving), 125(a) (acts endangering human life and property), and 324(4) (mischief) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS),” SHO Singh said. “The accused was not found to be under the influence of alcohol. Further investigation is underway.”
Police have seized the vehicle and are examining CCTV footage and eyewitness accounts to determine the exact chain of events. Officials noted that statements from the injured and other witnesses will help establish whether the driver’s actions were deliberate or a result of panic.
Local residents, still shaken by the incident, called for stricter enforcement of traffic rules in residential areas. “Such reckless driving could have claimed more lives. Authorities need to ensure this doesn’t happen again,” said a resident of Guru Nanak Enclave.
Police said a detailed report will be submitted once medical evaluations and witness statements are complete.
