Mohali, Dec. 23 — The second district-level Gatka competition of SAS Nagar will be held on Dec. 25 near Gurdwara Nanak Darbar in Sector 91, bringing together teams from across the district to compete in the traditional Sikh martial art.

The tournament is being organized by the Gatka Association District SAS Nagar under the aegis of the Gatka Association of Punjab, which is affiliated with the National Gatka Association of India.

Phool Raj Singh, chairman of the Directorate of International Affairs of the World Gatka Federation, said about 10 teams are expected to participate in the one-day event.

“The district tournament will provide a competitive platform for emerging players and help strengthen Gatka at the grassroots level,” Singh said. He added that the competition will feature both demonstrations and competitive displays of the martial art.

According to Singh, the event is part of a wider effort to promote Gatka as a structured sport in line with national regulations rather than limiting it to cultural presentations.

Harsimran Singh and Sherry Singh, coordinators of the Gatka Association of Punjab, said district-level competitions play a key role in the sport’s development.

“These tournaments help us identify talent early and prepare players for state and national competitions,” they said. They also noted that the event is likely to draw spectators from nearby areas, contributing to Gatka’s growing presence in urban Punjab.
