Uttar Pradesh, 12 February 2025: A horrifying incident at Lalitpur Medical College in Uttar Pradesh has sparked controversy after dogs were seen eating a newborn’s head on Tuesday. By the time onlookers intervened, the animals had already consumed a significant portion.
Hospital authorities have denied responsibility, claiming the family abandoned the infant’s body. “We believe the family threw the child’s body in a plastic bag. The hospital tag was still attached, which helped us identify him,” said Dr. Meenakshi Singh, Chief Medical Officer.
The baby was born at the District Women’s Hospital at Lalitpur Medical College on February 9. Underweight at 1.3 kg and suffering from congenital defects, including an underdeveloped skull and missing spine, the newborn was placed in the Special Newborn Care Unit (SNCU).
“He was alive with a heart rate of 80 beats per minute when admitted, but survival was uncertain,” Dr. Singh added.
The child died later that evening, and the hospital claims his body was handed over to the family. “The child’s aunt took the body. We have the receiving with her thumb impression,” Dr. Singh said.
On Tuesday, hospital staff were alerted to the dog attack. Upon investigation, a headless infant’s body was discovered. However, police were informed only hours later.
Lalitpur Medical College Principal D. Nath has set up a four-member committee and ordered a full report within 24 hours.
This is not the first time the hospital has faced scrutiny, with previous reports of negligence also surfacing.
