North India’s cardiology pioneer joins elite global group of interventional specialists

MOHALI, Feb 8 — Adding another feather to his cap, renowned cardiologist Dr Rakesh Kumar Jaswal has been elected as an Andreas Gruentzig Fellow for 2026 by the Academy of Cardiac Interventions (ACI), London. The recognition comes as a major milestone for the region’s medical fraternity, acknowledging decades of clinical excellence in complex heart procedures.

The fellowship is a distinguished honour reserved for senior interventional cardiologists who possess over 16 years of exceptional expertise. Dr Jaswal, who currently serves as the Director of Cardiology at Fortis Hospital Mohali, was selected after meeting the academy’s rigorous standards for proficiency and commitment to the field of cardiac interventions.

“I am humbled to inform you that I have been elected as an Andreas Gruentzig Fellow 2026 by the Academy of Cardiac Interventions London,” stated Dr Jaswal. He further noted that the award reflects a career dedicated to maintaining high standards of excellence and patient care in advanced cardiac sciences.

With an illustrious career spanning nearly four decades, Dr Jaswal is widely credited for introducing the life-saving trans-radial approach in North India in 2002. He has performed more than 40,000 invasive procedures and over 16,000 cardiac interventions, making him one of the most experienced practitioners in the country.
