CHANDIGARH, Dec 18: Authorities have declared Chandigarh a no-flying zone for drones and unmanned aerial vehicles on Dec. 19 and 20 in connection with Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s visit, citing security concerns.
The order, issued by District Magistrate Nishant Kumar Yadav, prohibits the use of drones across the Union Territory during the two-day period. The restriction has been imposed under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023.
“In view of emerging security threats and recent trends of terrorist activities involving the use of drones fitted with improvised explosive devices, the use of drones has been regulated in the interest of public safety,” the UT administration said in an official release.
The order applies to the entire city but exempts law enforcement agencies, including the police, paramilitary forces, the Indian Air Force and personnel of the Special Protection Group.
Officials said the measure is aimed at ensuring the security of the visiting VVIP as well as the general public. Any violation of the order will attract penal action under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, which deals with disobedience of lawful orders issued by public servants.
