Srinagar, October 17: A moderate earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale struck the Afghanistan-Tajikistan border region on Friday evening, sending tremors across large parts of Jammu and Kashmir.

According to a statement from the local weatherman, citing the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the earthquake occurred at approximately 5:45 p.m.. The epicenter was located at 36.62°N latitude and 72.72°E longitude, at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers.

Residents across the Kashmir Valley reported feeling the tremors, prompting many to rush out of their homes and offices in panic. Social media posts from Srinagar, Anantnag, and Baramulla showed anxious citizens gathering in open areas, though no major incidents were reported.

Officials and meteorologists confirmed that there were no immediate reports of casualties or property damage. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, urging residents to remain calm and take precautions in case of aftershocks.

Seismologists noted that while the earthquake originated far from India, the shallow depth and moderate intensity allowed the tremors to be felt over a wide area, including parts of northern India.
