Chandigarh, Nov 8: The Election Commission on Saturday ordered the suspension of Tarn Taran Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ravjot Kaur Grewal, just days before the Assembly byelection scheduled for November 11.

According to an official statement, Amritsar Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar has been given the additional charge of SSP Tarn Taran with immediate effect. The statement did not specify any reason for Grewal’s suspension.

Last month, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal had lodged a complaint with the Punjab Chief Electoral Officer against Grewal, accusing her of using police machinery to register “false” FIRs against party leaders and workers to obstruct their campaign activities for the Tarn Taran bypoll.

Following the allegations, the SAD had staged a dharna, demanding her removal and accusing her of acting with political bias.

Polling for the Tarn Taran Assembly bypoll will take place on November 11, while counting of votes is scheduled for November 14. The seat fell vacant after the death of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Kashmir Singh Sohal in June.
