SRINAGAR, Dec 30: The Economic Offences Wing of Crime Branch Kashmir has filed a chargesheet against a Bihar-based man for allegedly cheating more than 1,300 youths in Kashmir by promising jobs and tuition opportunities, officials said on Monday.
The chargesheet has been submitted before the Court of Sub-Judge, Sumbal, in connection with FIR No. 04/2022 under Sections 420 (cheating) and 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code.
The accused has been identified as Ranjeet Prasad, director of True Dreams Project India Pvt. Ltd., a resident of Gopalganj district in Bihar.
According to EOW Kashmir, the company carried out a recruitment campaign in the region through its representatives, during which trainees were offered monthly salaries ranging from Rs. 5,000 to Rs. 12,000. However, instead of being paid, the trainees were asked to deposit Rs. 2,400 each as a registration fee.
“Despite collecting money from the trainees, no salary was paid and the promised opportunities never materialised,” the EOW said in a statement.
Investigators said the probe established that several students were allegedly defrauded under the guise of employment and tuition programmes. The investigation was backed by oral and documentary evidence.
“As the accused failed to cooperate and could not be traced at the given address, the chargesheet has been filed in absentia by initiating proceedings under Section 512 of the CrPC,” the statement said.
