New Delhi, April 7: The Union government has raised the excise duty on petrol and diesel by ₹2 per litre, effective April 8, 2025, according to an official notification issued on Monday.

With the latest hike, excise duty on petrol will now stand at ₹13 per litre and on diesel at ₹10. The order, issued under Section 5A of the Central Excise Act, 1944, and Section 147 of the Finance Act, 2002, states that the revision is in the public interest.

Despite the increased levy, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas said retail prices will remain unchanged.

“PSU Oil Marketing Companies have informed that there will be no increase in retail prices of petrol and diesel, subsequent to the increase affected in Excise Duty Rates today,” the ministry posted on X.

The government has not provided further details on how the excise hike will be absorbed without affecting pump prices.
