MOHALI, July 29 — The family of a 22-year-old man who died of a suspected drug overdose in Mataur has threatened to protest with his body if police fail to arrest the person they claim injected him with narcotics.
The victim, whose identity has not been officially released, was the sole breadwinner for his family. His mother, speaking in anguish, said, “My husband died a few years ago. My son was the only one supporting us. Drugs are easily available in our area, but no one takes action.”
According to the victim’s sister, he had stepped out for work and returned home visibly unwell. “He was dizzy and struggling to breathe. He told me that the man who had taken him out had injected him with drugs,” she said.
She further alleged that when her brother was rushed to Phase 6 hospital and shared this information with police, his statement was ignored. “They didn’t take him seriously,” she claimed.
The youth was later shifted to Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, where he succumbed during treatment.
The family has issued a clear demand: immediate arrest of the alleged perpetrator. “If no arrest is made after the post-mortem, we will protest with the body,” the family declared.
Police officials said a case has been registered and the investigation is ongoing. “We are awaiting the post-mortem report. Further action will follow based on medical and forensic findings,” an officer said.
The incident has renewed concerns over the unchecked availability of drugs in the region, with locals saying it reflects a pattern of apathy by authorities despite repeated warnings.
