Family Standoff Delays Postmortem of Haryana ADGP

CHANDIGARH, October 13 — The impasse over the postmortem and final rites of Haryana Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Y. Puran Kumar deepened on Monday, as his family reiterated that the ceremony would not proceed until the arrest of senior officers named in the FIR.

Kumar, a senior IPS officer, was found dead at his residence in Sector 11, Chandigarh, on October 7. His body remains at the Advanced Autopsy Centre of PGIMER, where it was shifted from GMSH-16 on Saturday, as the standoff between the family and authorities continued.

The officer’s wife, senior IAS officer Amneet P Kumar, has refused to meet any BJP ministers or hand over his official laptop to the Chandigarh Police, who have sought it for examination. Investigators believe the laptop may contain crucial digital evidence, including the “final note” allegedly emailed by Kumar before his death.

“The note forms the basis of the FIR registered at Sector 11 police station on October 9,” said a senior police officer. “It includes serious allegations against top Haryana officials, and digital verification is essential for the probe.”

However, Amneet Kumar has publicly rejected police requests, citing mistrust over the handling of the investigation. During an emotional interaction at her residence, she lashed out at visiting politicians. “What have you done so far? What do you want to say? We don’t want anything from you. What have you done to my husband? If the government wants, it may take his body as well,” she said, surrounded by her brother and Punjab AAP MLA Amit Rattan Kotfatta.

The family remains steadfast that no postmortem or cremation will take place until Haryana DGP Shatrujeet Kapur, suspended Rohtak SP Narendra Bijarniya, and others named in the FIR are arrested.

Meanwhile, police officers involved in the probe have expressed concern that the ongoing delay could compromise forensic evidence. “Crucial indicators like gunpowder residues and ballistic markings could deteriorate, potentially weakening the case,” one officer noted.

A stream of political leaders continued to visit the bereaved family on Monday to offer condolences. Those who called on the family included Telangana Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment Ramdas Athawale, Punjab Cabinet Minister Harpal Singh Cheema, and former Union minister Pawan Kumar Bansal.

The standoff shows no sign of easing, with both the family and authorities holding firm to their positions as public pressure mounts over the unexplained death of one of Haryana’s senior-most police officers.
