Mohali, April 21 — Spectators at the Indian Premier League (IPL) match between Punjab Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore at Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Stadium, Mullanpur, on Sunday complained of being overcharged for basic necessities amid a severe heatwave.
Fans, who had purchased high-priced tickets to attend the match, alleged that vendors inside the stadium were selling water bottles for up to Rs 150—well above the retail price—while cold drink glasses, not fully filled, were priced at Rs 100. Even disposable glasses meant for free RO water were reportedly being sold for Rs 50 each.
“You’re not allowed to carry water inside, and then you’re forced to pay such high prices for basic hydration in this heat,” said one frustrated fan. Many questioned the lack of oversight by stadium authorities and the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA), accusing them of turning a blind eye to profiteering.
The problems extended beyond overpriced refreshments. Fans also reported poor parking arrangements, with many forced to walk 2–3 kilometers to reach the stadium due to lack of accessible parking spots.
Days before the match, ticketing issues had also surfaced. Sandeep Kumar, a resident of Ambala, said he booked his ticket online 15 days prior and was told to collect it on April 7. However, on arrival, staff at the counter asked him to return after three more days. “I took half-day leave from work and still had to argue with the staff to get my ticket,” he said. Though he eventually received it, he called the experience frustrating and arbitrary.
A viral social media post also showed fans confronting ticket staff over delays and alleged mismanagement.
Despite the soaring popularity of IPL 2025, the experience inside the stadium has raised questions about fan treatment. Many said they felt financially exploited after paying steep ticket prices and still enduring mismanagement, high costs, and inconvenience.
There has been no official statement yet from the Punjab Cricket Association or the stadium authorities regarding these complaints.
