FARIDABAD, February 20, 2026 — In a rare display of integrity, a scrap dealer in Faridabad has returned 100 grams of gold jewellery, valued at approximately 15 lakh rupees, to a resident who had accidentally sold it as junk. The formal handover took place at the office of ACP Ballabgarh, Jitesh Malhotra, on Thursday.
The owner, Ashok Sharma, stated that the incident occurred during a routine Diwali clean-up. He explained that his family had secured the ornaments in a box placed inside a sack to prevent theft during a trip to the Kumbh Mela. However, the sack was later mistaken for waste and sold to a local dealer.
“After finding the gold, I got it checked by a goldsmith,” the dealer, Haji Akhtar Khan, asserted. He declared that since Sharma had previously inquired about the missing items, he felt a moral obligation to return the valuables. Khan maintained that his entire family supported the decision to involve the police and return the property.
ACP Jitesh Malhotra praised the act, noting that such incidents affirm that honesty remains a vital social value. He stated that the police department deeply appreciated Khan’s conduct and urged citizens to be more vigilant with their personal belongings.
Sharma affirmed that while he had initially lost hope after the dealer could not find the box during the first search, the eventual recovery was a welcome surprise. He stated that the integrity shown by Khan serves as an example for the community.
