Farmers Defy Restrictions, Head towards Shambhu

Chandigarh, May 6: Tensions escalated across Punjab on Tuesday as farmer union members launched fresh mobilization efforts to reach Shambhu, undeterred by a robust police presence and sealed district borders.

Farmers began assembling in Moga and Jagraon early in the day, preparing to march toward the protest site despite the administration’s refusal to grant permission.

The protest call has been issued by the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha in response to what they call an “unjustified crackdown” by police on March 19 in Shambhu.

That day, several farm leaders were detained following a meeting with Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan in Chandigarh.

According to protest leaders, belongings seized during the crackdown have since been traced to many individuals.

“We will use all our strength to reach the dharna spot,” said one of the farm union leaders, reaffirming the unions’ determination to carry on with the protest.

The protesters are also demanding compensation for what they say are missing items taken during the police action.

These items, according to union leaders, were allegedly recovered from close associates of ruling party members and officers involved in the March 19 operation.

In anticipation of the march, Patiala police deployed heavy security in Rajpura, including an SP-rank officer, two deputy superintendents, and hundreds of personnel, to restrict movement toward Shambhu.

Despite the heightened security and administrative hurdles, the protesting unions have reiterated their intent to move ahead. “This is not just about compensation,” another union representative stated.

“This is about holding authorities accountable for their actions against peaceful protesters.”
