Farmers Refute Govt’s Claim of Dallewal Ending Hunger Strike

Chandigarh/Mohali, March 29 — Farmers have accused the Haryana government of spreading misinformation about the fasting status of Jagjit Singh Dallewal, leader of the Sanyukit Kisan Morcha (SKM Non-Political), following his release from jail.

While the government informed the Supreme Court that Dallewal had ended his 123-day-long hunger strike, SKM leaders denied the claim. Sukhjit Singh Hardo Jhande alleged the government was misleading the public and judiciary. “After arresting and evicting farmers from Shambhu and Khanauri borders, the government is running a misinformation campaign as rural anger against the regime grows,” he said.

According to SKM, Dallewal, who began his hunger strike on November 26, had only been consuming water. On January 18, he agreed to take medical assistance after the GOI proposed talks.

Dallewal ended his nine-day water abstinence on Friday after all detained farmers from Mohali, Shambhu, and Khanauri were released. Former DIG Narinder Bhargav and ADGP Jaskaran Singh, serving as government interlocutors, were seen offering him water.

Farmer leader Abhimanyu Kohar clarified in a video message that Dallewal had only consumed water and had not ended his fast. “A rumor is being spread that Dallewal has ended his fast. We wish to clarify that he continues his fast unto death,” he said.
