MUMBAI, Sept 7:— A fire erupted Sunday afternoon in a 24-storey residential tower in Mumbai’s western suburbs, prompting a large-scale firefighting operation, civic officials said.

The blaze started around 3 p.m. on the seventh floor of New Janakalyan Society at Shanti Nagar in Dahisar East, according to a fire department official. No casualties were reported.

“The high-rise was smoke-logged, which made firefighting operations difficult,” the official said, adding that at least seven fire engines and other emergency response vehicles were deployed to the spot.

Residents were evacuated as smoke spread through several floors, while teams worked to contain the fire from both inside and outside the building. Firefighting efforts were still underway by evening.

The cause of the blaze has not yet been determined. Civic authorities said an investigation will follow once the fire is fully extinguished.
