Ludhiana, Oct 7 — A five-year-old boy lost his leg in a tragic train mishap at Ludhiana railway station last week, the Government Railway Police (GRP) said on Monday. The incident, which occurred around 5:15 am on October 2, was captured on video and has since gone viral on social media.

The child, identified as Abash Singh, was travelling with his mother and two siblings to Meerut. According to police, the family was trying to board an early morning train bound for Delhi via Saharanpur and Meerut when the accident occurred.

Inspector Palwinder Singh, in-charge of Ludhiana GRP, said the family had likely arrived late, and the train had already started moving by the time they reached the platform. “The mother was carrying heavy luggage, and the children were running to catch the train. Abash managed to get on, but his mother and siblings were left behind,” the officer said.

Realising he was alone on the moving train, the child attempted to get off. “As he tried to alight, he lost his balance and slipped into the gap between the train and the platform. His left leg came under the wheels,” Inspector Singh added.

The injured boy was immediately rushed to Christian Medical College and Hospital (CMCH), Ludhiana, and was later shifted to Meerut for further treatment. Doctors had to amputate his left leg due to the severity of the injury. Police officials said the child is now reportedly stable.

Inspector Singh said no criminal case has been registered as preliminary investigation found no indication of foul play. “It appears to be an unfortunate accident caused by the family’s attempt to board a moving train,” he mentioned.

The GRP has urged passengers to exercise caution and avoid boarding or alighting from moving trains, especially when travelling with children.
